wbinfo -g fails

I am using RH 7.2 with the samba 2.2.2 rpms from rawhide. The PDC is a
win2k/server.
I can join the domain and start winbindd -i -d100.  wbinfo -t returns
'Secret is good',
however the last thing that winbindd spews out is


contacting controller CANSERV to check secret
secret is good
read failed on sock 10, pid 19478: EOF

Now wbinfo -u gives

Error looking up domain users

the output from winbindd is
