smbpasswd file NFS sharable?

I tried this but I noticed a caution about too many sockets in the docs.
So I checked, and sure enough, each user causes the smb server to
hold open a socket to the passwd server.  With over a hundred users
connected to the samba server, that's a lot of sockets wasted.
