FIXED! Winbind, PDC not found with BDC

Maybe this will help others with similar problems. I have fixed the
probelms with winbind trying to connect via the BDC rather than the PDC.
As it turns out, it was not a problem with samba or winbind (Yep, I did
have quasar set as the password server - I misled in my opriginal post).
WINS was the culprit. I had several new PCs on the network with out the
browse master service disabled (WINS is really bad when this happens) and
a lot of the informatin in the WINS databse was corrupt and interferring
with the whole network. I was suffering from both the "can't connect to
user dtabase" and "secrets is bad" problems as well and they all went away
as soon as WINS was cleaned up. I actually decoupled the BDC wins service
(running on a different subnet) from the PDC WINS service as well. I will
attempt to connect them again, but may look at different options (the BDC
subnet is on a slow microwave connection that is subject to frequent
disruptions hence the use of a WINS server there).

Thanks to all who sent replies. They steered me in the right direction and
confirmed diagnostic steps to take.

also, I should read my email in reverse order as the solutions to the
preexec script were gratiously supplied :-)
