[Samba] Samba & LDAP & Encrypt passwords

doing a brief search i am not clear whether or not
samba(latest stable) can do LDAP authentication
and keep encrypt passwords = yes . Last i looked
samba could not do this with PAM, but since
SAMBA has (last i checked) native LDAP support
is this possible? i think it couldn't do it with
PAM because PAM only returns a code, pass/fail?
whereas LDAP returns a lot more information
to the process(provided its doing LDAP nativly
and not LDAP through PAM)

i started looking into LDAP this week and really
like it.
