There was an error on big endian machines with joining a domain
using smbpasswd with the -U option. You have 2 choices

Choice 1
delete the machine from the domain using server manager on the PDC 
and then re-add the machine. Use smbpasswd as above but without 
the -U option 

choice 2
get the latest SAMBA_2_2 CVS code which has a fix for this.
