A good way to begin helping with documentation would be to just send
suggested improvements to the list.  Ideally these would be structured
as diffs to the documentation source, but if you're not comfortable
with that it would be sufficient to say "here's a better version of
the paragraph about section Snappy-Foo."  

This thread is a good example of a specific way in which it might be
better: cross referencing features against the version in which they
were introduced.  Good library or Unix documentation has this.

Later on if you feel like you need to make big changes in
organization, or coordinate many documentation developers, some more
process might be needed.  But to start with small changes would be
great.
