I tried that - here's the commented-off entry in /etc/inetd.conf
explaining why it's commented off:

# "Non-NetBIOS" SMB listener - but it needs a different config file,
# or it dies with "pid file already exists"!
# microsoft-ds stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/smbd smbd -D -d 1

Should I have invoked it in some other way? There's no "pid file"
argument for smbd, and nothing except "debug pid" in smb.conf's
manpage. That doesn't seem to apply in this case.
