Well, now I've found smbd not accepting popup messages (which is why I'm 
now taking longer to reply to mail, we have popup notification of mail):

[bgmilne:/home/bgmilne/tmp/samba/packaging/Mandrake]# echo "test popup" 
|smbclient -M `hostname`
added interface ip=xx.xxx.xxx.36 bcast=xxx.xxx.xxx.255 nmask=255.255.255.0

CVS from last night ... on both client and server, but it must be the 
server (one receiving the message), since our mail server is sending, 
and nothing has changed on that box in long time ...
