You are correct.  But, trying

# mount -t smbfs -o username=<valid_NT&Linux_user> //<NT box>/<share 
name>  /mnt/<share name>

... I get the same thing, but now using the right name...

Sorry for the red herring.  My major problem here is the NT is refusing 
to authenticate the user.
