I have been trying to setup Samba on my home network but... it is giving me a
hard time. I went to the diagnosis.txt that comes with Redhat 7.2 and tried
some of the tests. I tried the first three and on the first one I got an
error message. "session request to [servername] failed (Not listening for
calling name". I got a second one in that same first test "session request to
"SMBSERVER failed (Not listening for calling name". Can anyone suggest
anything?

Hi,
How can you arrange for graphical logins (gdm or kdm) on a RH7.3 box
that are authenticated against an NT domain controller?
I have winbind running and can successfully run wbinfo. I have
configured PAM for
login and have been able to successfully login from a text login prompt
to my Linux box using my NT username and password. finger works, etc.
But I have failed to configure gdm or kdm so that I can authenticate
a user via a
graphical login. Is this possible? which PAM modules must you configure?
I tried
gdm, xdm, adding one for kdm, but I am not sure how to configure the PAM
modules
for this.

I guess you are new at this.
Look into the Redhat firewall first.
I don't know what your security needs are right now. If the REDHAT machine
is not facing the internet or whatever,
try ipchains -L -n | less
to see if that will show your rules.
If it does, ipchains -F might flush them all, letting you connect to it on
these ports:

netbios-ns	137/tcp # NETBIOS Name Service
netbios-ns	137/udp
netbios-dgm	138/tcp # NETBIOS Datagram Service
netbios-dgm	138/udp
netbios-ssn	139/tcp # NETBIOS session service
netbios-ssn	139/udp

If this doesn't get anything done, make sure the daemons are running on the
Redhat box.
ps ax | grep mbd
assuming that RedHat isn't using xinetd to run samba.

In that case,
netstat -anp | grep 139 might show xinetd listening.
If this command fails, drop the "p".

I have been having troubles for sometime now getting swat to run. From what
I can see everything is set up correctly. Is there anyone here running swat
on Mac OS X that would be willing to let me use their binary?

Try wdm. I know that (for Debian 2.2) it was the only ?dm that was
PAM-enabled.

Subject: [Samba] Japanese Characters between Linux Server to Mac OS X Client

Hi All,

What is the correct configuration to get Japanese Characters to
translate correctly between a Linux Server and Mac OS X Client?

I have set the following in smb.conf on my linux box:
	code page directory = /usr/share/samba/codepages
	client code page = 932
	coding system = UTF8

but this does not seem to work.. I have tried setting coding system to
SJIS, EUC and HEX and none seem to work...

Does anybody have this configuration and has anybody been able to make
this work?

My setup is: Linux Redhat 7.3 with SAMBA 2.2.3
			  Mac OS X 10.1.5

Thanks,

S.r.

Well, when I do it, it prompts me to choose from a list of Windows-supported
printers (as it would in add new hardware for instance), so I select the one
and it uploads the driver and thats it. In any case, once you've installed
one driver you can tell it to use another by clicking the additional driver
button in the printer's properties. Try getting the (non-digitally signed)
HP drivers from hp.com, because you can unpack them into a directory and
then just tell Windows to use that - it should upload them to the server's
print$ share.

I've got this working with a LaserJet 5 which uses the pretty much the same
set of drivers as the LaserJet 4.

I had a few problems with this but most were solved when I logged on the the
domain I'm using, rather than use it as a workgroup.

Yeah I've had that. It's linked with your other problem with Messenger.
Outlook is trying to get your MSN contact list when it's sat there with its
splash screen up, but since Messenger wont start, it can't. Hence it sits
there for a bit, until it decides MSN isn't going to play.

> Also, as a side note, maybe someone might have the answer to this as

No. This is a problem with recent versions of Messenger. It'll only let
admin or local users use it. Version 4.5 does not have this problem, and if
you downgrade, start using it, and then upgrade it again, I believe it
doesn't do it again.

If it's not that, then make sure you've not got any policies set that
disable MSN for domain users.

Hope this helps!

Phil.

Yep. Delete all your desktop.ini files from the default user profile you're
using (either in netlogon or on the local machine) and you shouldnt get this
for new users. Delete it from your current working user profile as well. The
reason it happens is that Windows XP puts a desktop.ini in your
Programs/Startup folder, so at every logon it executes desktop.ini from
there, whch of course runs notepad to view it. You'll probably notice that
if you enable the Quick Launch bar you'll get a desktop.ini in that, as well
as various other inappropriate places on your Start Menu.

In case you didn't know, desktop.ini stores per-folder settings, hence
there's going to be one in each folder. It'll turn up a lot in your logs
because Windows looks for it each time you open a file.

You can also make that file hidden which may stop it, though I'm not sure
how. Try hide files = /*.ini/, or read the man pages for smb.conf (theres a
way of doing it).

Phil.

Nope I just checked and the permissions on the printcap are set such that
root and the group printadm are able to read, write, and execute them. My
user is both in the printadm group and is in the samba admin list in
smb.conf. Looking at the logs I get every indication that I am properly
mapping to root when I come through samba.

Yes I did realize that I could create the printer manually and the us
rpcclient to attach the driver. However I'm trying to build this up so that
our normal IT manager can pick it up and manage it with minimum effort.
Seeing as he is used to Windows NT, (if at all possible) for him to be able
to use the Windows interfaces to manage this box.

On a different note, after I manually created and attached the drivers,
I found that when I connect to the printer from Windows and try to open the
properties menu for this printer a protection fault. This is an HP CP1700
printer. When I use client side drivers, everything works fine. Why would
putting the drivers onto the server make such a difference?

Thanks for the help.

Jason Corekin

Hi there,

I successfully connected a windows XP machine with my samba server (red

Problem is that the files on the share aren't writeable as I would
expect. Instead, they're only visible as read only. What am I
overlooking.

What are the permissions on /data and the files in question on the linux server?
What happens if you remove the write list parameter?

Well it's odd that you're getting Access Denied for anything as root. If you
really are logged in as root then it can't really be a file permissions
issue, so it's more like a software based access issue, like samba isnt
mapping you to root correctly.

It shouldn't do. Are the drivers signed by MS or not? I have had some
problems with the XP print spooler crashing when I went to properties on a
printer with unsigned HP drivers. In the end I just used Windows' built in
ones.

Don't know if this will be any help but here's my print$ definition from
smb.conf:

[print$]
        path = /var/printers
        admin users = @"Domain Admins" root @lp
        guest ok = Yes
        create mask = 0644
        create mask = 0755
        write list = @lp root @"Domain Admins"

I've also got: printer admin = @"Domain Admins" root @lp

Permissions on /var/printers are 755 root:root
Permissions on /var/printers/W32x86 are 755 root:users

Samba 2.2.5, no patches, RH7.2, LPRng 3.8.12-1

Phil.
