[Samba] Logging into \\server with a different username on 9x

Windows 2000 askes for a user name and password when going onto a
different samba server
9x just asks for a password to connect

Is there anyway of putting a different username with windows 9x? I tried
\\resource\share%newusername
But it either fails the password, or creates a share called
share%username on resource

Any ideas?
