I don't get this NIS+ situation in my mind. But it can be a problem:
smbpasswd is only for "passwort information" you need "account
information" for the theachers as well. And this comes from NIS+. Can
the theachers log into the studens server with telnet or similar? Any
way, this would unlikely lead to a Office specific problem.

set locking = no in smb.conf. mount the NFS-mount with nolock,
restart samba and try again. It may be a looking Problem. We have
these sometimes over NFS too.
