What samba version have you used bevor you upgraded to version 2.2.1?
There have been bigger changes in the security area after 1.19. For
example the default for "security = " changed from share to user. I'm
not sure if security = share will fix your problem. Try to make your
way through all release notes since your old version. For the
parameters look at man smb.conf, searce the difference between the
defaults.

What do you mean by "access the server" if not accessing a share?
browsing?

There are a couple of browsing related parameters in smb.conf. May be
look at "restrict annonymous" and check for a vailied guest account.

"map to guest" may have been changed as well. It is closly related to
the security parameter.

You are using plaintext passwords. They often cause repeated password
prompts because NT doesn't store them.
