What is Samba speed?

Hi,
on Celeron 500, 196 MB RAM, software RAID5 with 3 IDE discs I get 6 seconds
which is apx. 6 MB/s... but when I did "..count=1000000..." it took me 2:23
which is somewhere about 3.5 MB/s...
