samba will not work for me... :/

I'm using samba 2.2.2 on a FreeBSD 4.4 machine and it's working fine. 
 What version of Samba are you running?  Did you install Samba from the 
ports or download the source?   Are you using encrypted passwords?  Have 
you added the user account to the smbpasswd file?
