Speaking off the top of my head, I know slackware doesn't use PAM.
Under 2.2.1a we had a bug in detecting the crypt libraries.
I was sure we fixed this in 2.2.2.  You try the previous workaround.

Check in include/config.h for the string "#define HAVE_TRUNCATED_SALT 1"
Try commenting this line out and recompiling SWAT and see what happens.

I'll try to reproduce this on a slackware 8.0 system when I get back in
the office.
