As far as I can tell this all boils down to the selection of the "best"
winbind separator character.
'\' has special meaning every where, BUT it is the windows default.
'+' has special meaning to sendmail.

If you are 100% certain that '.' or '_' are not ever going to be in your
usernames then try one of them.
