what does stat -v tells you?
what version of samba are you using?
maybe you have a precompiled samba?
this support for large files is determined at compile time by samba, and if 
it was compiled on a host with glibc 2.2 and a 2.4 kernel, then is enabled, 
else it isn't.
it looks likely that if you have some debian binaries compiled for potato, it 
wouldn't work...
