Well, you certainly have some reading to do!
This happens because there is a bidding war between the servers to see who
will be the domain master and preferred master and who know what else.
You can control how much weight a particular
server has in bidding for that job. Longevity is one factor that gives a
server weight, so, that could explain what is going on. These events will be
chronicled in log.nmbd.
Look at the preferred master, domain master and os level parameters in your smb.conf. I don't
use NT so can't be more specific, but,you don't want linux to be the
domain master or preferred master and you should set the os level low.
Also, make sure wins support = no
