Samba Throughput Issues

Hello

I am using Samba to transfer files between SGI IRIX (6.5, SGI O2/256 RAM)
and Windows 98 (Athlon 650 w/256 RAM). When transferring files (pretty
much any size) over a 10Mbit network, I can only get about 400-500
kilobytes per second (using the 'smbclient' application, IRIX doesn't have
smbmount). Is this my problem, or is it just a performance issue with
Samba?

For comparison, using FTP over the same network, between the same
computers (except this time using the FTP server on the IRIX), I get
transfer rates of about 1 megabyte per second.

The network is not overloaded, only three computers are connected.

Any comments/suggestions on how to speed up the transfer rate? Thanks.
