2 computers, different IP class, problems connecting

Hmmmm....
This sound like a network mystery.
I would post:
The output of ifconfig
/etc/hosts
/etc/resolv.conf
The output of arp -n
The out of route -n
/etc/host.conf
Have you traceroute'd ping the linux box?
Can you ping your linux box from the linux box using its 192.168.1.1 ip ?
