dmesg contains a "SMBFS: need mount version 6" message. I am running kernel
version 2.2.14 and have found some information on the error message itself.
One question I have is if I upgrade my kernel to 2.2.20, will that take care
of the problem?

No idea.
Try:
smbmount \\\\server\\share /mnt/yourmountpoint -o debug=6 1>logfile
Them, look over what is in logfile.
