Strange smbadduser behavior

I just installed Suse 7.3 with Samba 2.2.1a-32. Setting up smb.conf was not a
problem. When I tried to map the users using smbadduser I got the following
message:

# smbadduser todd:todd

No such map passwd.byname. Reason: Request arguments bad
ERROR: todd Not in passwd database SKIPPING...

I searched Google for help first, but most of what I saw related to NIS. Is
Samba trying to use NIS for authentication, and if so how do I make it use the
/etc/passwd file?
