MANY MANY MANY THANKS (After a week of frustraition.)

I didn't realize ipchains was even installed on this server! But that was
the problem. No ipchains, and the problem goes away...

newer redhat linux distributions now block remote access to all tcp ports
by default via ipchains.  my hunch is that this is where your problem lies.
