Have you tried checking your /etc/pam.d/samba file settings. Mine looks like
this:

auth    required        /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
account required        /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth

I cannot get swat to work for samba 2.2.2-2

This is my xinetd file

This is my xinetd/swat file
