Samba 2.0.7 on BSD/OS 4.2

Alright, I give up. I'm going to go out in the parking lot and
scream.

Over the years I have built many, many versions of Samba on many
versions of BSD[386,OS] and other unixen. I have never, ever had
trouble like this (except, of course, with Irix). Never with a
BSD.

4.2 ships with Samba 2.0.6 (why? -- 2.0.7 was released last
April). I've been running 2.0.7 on a DEC Alpha running OSF 4.0d
just fine since last May. I've just installed a BSD/OS 4.2 system
to replace the Alpha. The 2.0.6 out of BSDi's box works sort of
OK (it has some weird erratic problems with W2K clients, just like
2.0.6 on Red Hat 6.2 does.) I've never had these problems on
2.0.7 on Alpha or Dead Rat and the release notes for 2.0.7
indicate a half dozen W2K bugs fixed.

So, stop bellyaching and just frigging install 2.0.7, right?
Yeah, right. 2.0.7 configures and compiles just a pretty as a
peach. NMBD starts and runs like a champ. SMBD starts and begins
parsing smb.conf and gets to the printers ans starts this
nonsense:

[2001/03/29 19:08:03, 3] param/loadparm.c:lp_load(2805)
  pm_process() returned Yes
[2001/03/29 19:08:03, 3] param/loadparm.c:lp_add_ipc(1594)
  adding IPC service
[2001/03/29 19:08:03, 7] param/loadparm.c:lp_servicenumber(2897)
  lp_servicenumber: couldn't find minx_genicom
[2001/03/29 19:08:03, 3] param/loadparm.c:lp_add_printer(1629)
  adding printer service
[2001/03/29 19:08:03, 7] param/loadparm.c:lp_servicenumber(2897)

and names each printer in the printcap file and then says it can't
find the printer. Then SMBD dies without any other messages.
Just vanishes. No core file, nada. I've configed it with various
options and none of those make any difference. Has anybody got
this thing running?

Please CC: me directly on any reply you might post.

thx,
