Guest accounts

I don't really understand what's behind the use of guest accounts in
samba.
Does it mean:
If a user access a resource shared by a samba server, and his
username/password is not registered in the linux server then let him access the resource using the guest account?

I understand that would mean I would have to use a valid username in
smb.conf guest account and that if I add guest ok = yes to a share it
should be accesible to anybody and the samba server would treat him as
user "whateverIsetasguestaccount"?

If this is it I must be doing something wrong because it doesn't
work.Anybody using a different account than "s2" is prompted for a
user/pass and can only use the resource using s2's account
