Hi Patrick,

   I had the same problem. Here is how I fixed it:

1) bumped server to 128 (265 in one instance) of RAM

2) use only XFce (www.xfce.org) as my GUI

3) fixed all my mac addresses to fixed IP in /etc/dhcpd.conf

4) removed all netbios setting in dhcpd.conf except:
                option netbios-node-type 1;
(This turn off wins)

5) created /etc/hosts based on dhcpd.conf fixed mac's

6) set smb.conf name resolution to:
                 name resolve order = host bcas

7) on the windows machines TURN OFF WINS. Use
DNS to resolve names (don't forget a simple
DNS on your server that basically only tells about
itself).

8) Verify WINS is off and that your fixed IP's are being used
on your Windows clients. Do a "release" and "renew" with "winipcfg"
or "ipconfig" depending on OS.

Good Luck,
--Tony
