Excel 2000 saving problem

I would appreciate it if anyone could shed some light on a problem we
are experiencing. We have a share owned by a a number of users. The
problem is that if a user saves a certain file from Excel 2K, and the
file already exists, the save will fail, and report that the user will
have to rename the temporary save file (which works). 

The excel 2k files are read-only, and auto save on change. Also, as far
as we have been able to tell older versions of excel don't seem to have
this problem.

Any help much appreciated.
