Bad syntax in the smbpasswd line that was given to you. It should read
smbpasswd -a -m SOLO9100$

OK....here's the result of that:
[root at eagle /etc]# useradd SOLO9100$
[root at eagle /etc]# smbpasswd -am SOLO9100$
