Chris,

I'm coming in late on this thread.  However, if you want 
to prevent smbd from preforming gethostbyaddr() calls, remove
the hosts allow line in your smb.conf.  Otherwise, you should 
make sure that all clients have forward and reverse DNS 
entries.
