Gentlemen,and lady, I first want to say thanks for all the help, there
are new things that are happening, but I want to go more into some
details that I have found....
next let me give more scenario.
I have one box, which is a squid box multi homed, (two nics) on connects
to the inner netwrok, the other to the internet. it is set to:
security = server
password server = discflo_PDC
and I have been abler to connect to this one no problem...since I put
the :
hosts allow = 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0
when it connects it gos to the password server and takes a few seconds
to connect, it authenticates, and then it connects to the other shares
instantaniuosly......
I can ping the netbios name of other machines and it replies, no
problem.
NOW with the machine in which I am having the problem "penguin" here are
some more things...
it is a multihomed machine, as well, connected to the internet and our
internal network, and has a firewall running on it. I thought I oculd
ping the netbios name of another machine, but it comes back as "unknown
host".
I look in my log.smb and see this
[2001/01/24 11:03:19, 1] lib/util_sock.c:client_name(1030)
Gethostbyaddr failed for 192.168.0.55
here is part of my log.nmb file:
[2001/01/24 12:25:20, 4] nmbd/nmbd_workgroupdb.c:dump_workgroups(308)
dump_workgroups()

[2001/01/24 12:25:20, 4]
nmbd/nmbd_workgroupdb.c:find_workgroup_on_subnet(181)
find_workgroup_on_subnet: workgroup search for DISCFLO on subnet
UNICAST_SUBNET: found.

now, I have now changed my server setup to this:
security = user
(no password server)
encrypt password = yes
smb passwd file = /etc/smbpasswd
and now I connect flowlessly and extremely quick, it doesn't need to
authenticate to the password server so when it connects to the samba
server to remap the drives it doesn't lag anymore.
I want to know what the problem was with it and authenticating on the
PDC though....so what I am going to do now it just bring up another
linux box, and only one NIC and try that and see what happens.....
thanks all of you....larry
