Really awful performance of ACT running off of server

Hello Samba Folk,

I have a an application, ACT2000, that stores its files on my
Samba server. The server has been in use for a couple of years
running various versions of Samba over time and has never given me
headaches like it is with this app. Whenever there is something
more involved than a single record update (such as changing the
same field in 700 records), the app crawls to a halt. In the
given example, it took 20 minutes to complete but the same
operation done on a local hard drive took less than a minute. The
server itself doesn't seem to be that bogged down (max load avg
1.3 maybe 1.5), but the PC is crawling.

DEC AlphaServer 400 4/233 192MB RAM
DECchip 21143 100Mbit ethernet
DEC Unix 4.0d
Samba 2.0.7

Any clues will be gratefully received.

thx,
