Agreed.  But are you running WINS anywhere?
If not, you might want to consider having Samba run it,
and have your pc's point to it as their WINS server also.
I'd be willing to be that would fix it as well (provided
of course that you set your 'name resolve order' in
smb.conf to have 'wins' as it's first method).
