VI Transport effort for Samba/CIFS/SMB?

Hello,

Being new to SMB and Samba I was wondering if anyone is working on
specifying a high-performance VI (Virtual Interface) mapping of SMB/CIFS
like what is happening with DAFS (www.dafscollaborative.org
<http://www.dafscollaborative.org> )?

If it isn't currently worked - would other individuals/organizations like
such a feature?
