Confusion between Drive Volume name and directory of same name.

Sharing a windows drive which has a volume name the same as a directory does
not work correctly when shared with smbmount.

Versions:
 Windows Me: 4.90.3000
 Linux: 2.2.17
 Samba: 2.0.6

The shared windows drive had a volume name which was the same as the short
name of a folder in the root of the drive, e.g:
 Drive E:\
 Volume Name: DEVDRIVE
 Folder: E:\DevDrive

When mounted (with smbmount), ls -l shows:
  -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Jan 9 10:56 DevDrive*
i.e. It has taken the name from the folder, but it is not treating it like a
directory.
