Unable to access SWAT

I am running samba 2.0.7 on a Red Hat Linux 6.2 system. I have set up swat
in /etc/inetd.conf and /etc/services as specified in the swat documentation.

However, when I attempt to log in to swat using the system root password,
swat will not accept this. What do I need to do to access swat?
