Slow writes to big directories

  Yopu're seeing a (dis-)feature of UFS, not samba. If you
happen to be running Solaris, you can use -o logging, but on
Linux you're already running a fater filesystem.

  In principle this should not vary based on the client,
but Windows machines make lots of extra directory operations
because they're not seen as expensive.
