Ping to networks?

I have two comps.
1 Linux Redhat6.1	IP: 192.168.1.1
1 Win98			IP: 192.168.1.2

i have fixed a DLinkCard and the card gets detected and the drivers working
fine. etc.
so should i be able to 'ping' to each of the systems.
ie. say ping frm linux to win98 -> # ping 192.168.1.2
        ping frm win98 to linux -> # ping 192.168.1.1

I yet havent configured samba, neither haave the packages been installed.
