As an alternative answer, read Encryption.txt in the Samba documentation
for instruction on implementing encrypted passwords. If all your clients
are newer, (Win 95 and up), this can potentially greatly simplify your
life.

Hi Kevin,
As long as you continue to use cleartext passwords (encrypt passwords = no
in smb.conf)
you are just gonna have to LIVE with this behavior. This is a design change
for newer clients
like win2k, where it will NOT send a cleartext password accross the wire
without explicit interactive
confirmation (the username/password window) from a human.
Sorry,
Don

Subject: Synchronizing passwords
Hello,
A Samba greenie here that needs help. We are running
version 1.9 on HP-UX 10.20. Windows 95/98 users are
not being prompted to enter their UNIX password when
they log into the network...however, NT/2000 users are
being prompted every time they log in. What do I need
to configure to keep this from happenning?
Thanks,
Kevin
