Remote Connection of Win98 to Linux Server

I must preface this by saying that I'm not very experienced with Samba but
I'm learning very quickly.

I'm trying to setup an application to access a Linux Server (Mandrake 7.2)
running  Samba 2.0.7-18MDK via an ISP Internet connection using Windows 95,
98,  2000 or Appletalk as clients. Having a few difficulties and would like
to know if there is a solution to the following:

1) When logging into Samba (or onto a share), using an internet connection,
Samba seems to take between 50-70 seconds to respond to a windows Run or
Explore request. You can see the request leaving the modem and can count the
50-70 seconds before the modem responds from the Linux box. Any ideas?

2) Can I restrict shares for write permission only? If yes, how is this
done?

3) Is there a way of listing files that samba should not allow to be
broadcast? ie. Every folder of a share contains folders like quota.user,
TheVolumeSettingsFolder, Network Trash Folder and TheFindByContentFolder.
Some of these are used for netatalk. We don't want these files to be visible
to the users that connect via SAMBA.

4) Is there a way to restrict Clients to view ONLY shares they have access
permission for? At the moment all shares a visible when a Client logs onto
the Server Box.
