tar extracting samba-2.2.0.tar.gz

I downloaded this version to install and cannot get the tar command to work.
We are running AIX version 4.3.2.  It appears that we might need gunzip
which I am not familiar with.  Is there a way to get this file extracted or
to download a different not using gunzip?
