An other thing that have happened: 
Some Windows-versions von Netscape treat a file as ascii if you 
download it form an http-source and if the browser don't know the .gz 
as mime-type. Check if the size of the file is the one given on the 
webside, use ftp, check your brousers mime-typs, ...
