smbmount does not work to an os/2 warp

No, but you may be using old versions of things.

Try samba 2.2.0 and linux kernel 2.2.19 (or 2.4.3). And remove all traces 
of these files before installing 2.2.0

mount.smb
mount.smbfs
smbmount
smbmnt
smbumount

(keep a backup of them)
