Connect to windows network

I know this may seem like a simple question, but I can't find the answer
anywhere.... I am at university and would like to use Linux to share files
over the university network, I used to be able to do this in Windows from
the network neighbourhood icon, and would like to use something similar
now.

I'm new to all this stuff so please keep that in mind, and sorry again if
this is a lame question.
