Samba - slow browsing/folder opening

John,

If nothing Don mentions has changed, then I'd be looking long and hard at
your new HW configuration. Previously you ran -- I'm assuming here -- your
Samba shares off a Win9X box with a shared IDE drive. Now you've gone to
RAID on a bazillion GHz box. But RAID -- and especially RAID5 -- has a lot
of overhead associated with it.

For reference, I run Samba on my RS/6000 quad processor box under AIX. The
data drives are some of the best in the industry (SSA), but they're in a
RAID5 configuration, and when I open a folder there is indeed a delay.
Probably not 3 or 4 seconds, but a noticable delay nonetheless. My Samba
configuration is optimized, my config file is optimized, and my HW is
working as it should -- it's simply latency and overhead...

/tom
