smbfs does not report all files

There is actually such a place as ftp.kernal.org ... most people would
spell that as ftp.kernel.org.

18pre9 is in the /pub/linux/kernel/people/alan/2.2.18pre directory.

Hmm, you should have a few starting with smb_ (dmesg and /var/log/messages)
smb_readdir_* is normally not quiet about errors. Maybe it doesn't see
anything wrong with what is happening ...

You could also enable the DEBUG and DEBUG_VERBOSE in the Makefile. That
will generate lots and lots of kernel log messages and slow things down a
lot. That may show something.
