log in problems

I have a Linux samba server running and I'm trying to access the shared dir through Win2000 and Win Mel.  I can see the dir but, when I try to access the dir it prompts me with a log in.  This is fine but, it does not take the username and password I supply.  I have the username and password setup on the linux server.  Does it not sync with the unixpasswd files.  If anyone can help I would appreciate it.  Did I mention I'm new to this.  Thanks
