For the record, I traced this problem to the NT4.0SP3+ "feature" of 
requiring encrypted passwords and got around the problem by enabling 
encrypted passwords in Samba.  The clue was getting error 1240 in the 
process of trying other things and then finding a reference to 1240 in a 
FAQ (1240 being a little easier to check on than 5!).  Once I got that far, 
the info on what to do was all in the docs!
