Ah! OK, did that, then the following occurs:

bash$  cd smb_dir
bash$ /bin/ls 
DSCF0190.JPG  VBMail           a"b.txt      dd
sample2.are 


bash$ /bin/ls -l a*
/bin/ls: a"b.txt: No such file or directory
drwxrwxr-x    1 jhaar    jhaar         512 Jul 22 01:39 aa
drwxrwxr-x    1 jhaar    jhaar         512 Jul 28 12:48 aaa
drwxrwxr-x    1 jhaar    jhaar         512 Jun 22 02:02 ariane        

So you're right, it doesn't like it at all...
